Synopsis

The protagonist, trying to avoid charming the unfeeling Duke Visenna, focuses on memorizing the family's complex history for an upcoming test. She discovers a bizarre method used by another candidate who created a clone to pass. She believes she can manage the knowledge, but is given a present from the Duke, which turns out to be a poison, and a demand for gold from a mysterious Ferze before the formal test even begins.
