Duran is introduced to a legendary sword, Ascalon, which he deeply desires, alongside an offer to become an adopted son or an apprentice. He refuses adoption but accepts apprenticeship. Later, Duran and his master infiltrate an enemy army camp, challenging them to a battle of knights. Duran confidently states he will win the war if they refuse to have it.
