Synopsis

The chapter depicts a brutal attack on an escort agency convoy where the chief porter, despite his limp, tries to protect his people. He makes a desperate gamble, claiming a valuable book is in a carriage and threatening to burn it if they don't let the survivors escape. His bluff is exposed, and despite flashbacks to his lifelong dream of being an escort warrior, he is ultimately defeated and dies, reflecting on his unfulfilled life.
