Synopsis

The McLains' declaration of war on the Peretas is a ruse, as the main character's forces actually attack Befros' second castle, Tomodo, a crucial granary. Their strategy involves holding the castle, drawing Befros away from the Peretas, and waiting for the king's predicted death on New Year's Day. The death will trigger a national funeral, effectively stopping the war. The chapter ends with the attack on Tomodo and the defenders' initial efforts to hold the ramparts against the surprisingly long-ranged attack.
